AbstractAurora Flight Sciences is moving forward with several autonomous vehicle programs, including GoldenEye 80 (in flight test), Excalibur (planned flight testing in ’09), Orion High Altitude Long Loiter and Ultra-Long Endurance vehicles, and the Vulture/Odysseus solar powered, 5-year UAS. All of these vehicles conform to Aurora’s standards for low cost, open architecture, use of COTS wherever possible, and conformance to military standards such as STANAG 4586. The research and development center is supporting these programs and pursuing advanced research into next-generation propulsion systems and propulsion control, advanced composite manufacturing methods, bio-inspired and vision-aided guidance and control, and multi-vehicle control. In the area of multi-vehicle control, Aurora is ready to transition its on-board planning manager (OPM) to testing in teams of disparate unmanned systems. The OPM is an open-architecture solution that can be installed on any UAV, making it part of a coordinated team. Human interface design for multi-vehicle coordination is proceeding in the OPM context.
