AbstractAres I-X Flight Test System ID Results

On 28 October 2009, NASA conducted the Ares I-X flight test, which was a pre-cursor to the planned Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle. Among the primary objectives of the flight test were to demonstrate control of a vehicle dynamically similar to the Ares I and to characterize the integrated vehicle roll torque throughout first stage flight.

One of the innovative approaches of this test was the injection of programmed test inputs (PTI) into the thrust vector control (TVC) commands to facilitate post-flight system identification and analysis. The objective of these maneuvers and analyses was to identify and validate pre-flight models for control stability margins, aerodynamics, and structural dynamics. While these techniques have been used previously in flight test campaigns for a wide variety of aircraft, this is the first time they have been employed on a launch vehicle.

The design of the PTI maneuvers will be discussed, along with analysis results to date including the control stability margins and the roll dynamics.
